The Story Behind Senseo and the Douwe Egberts Corporation

It was a match made in heaven, at least if your heaven includes wonderful coffee. When Douwe Egberts, the world's second largest coffee roaster, teamed up with Royal Philips Electric, one of the world's leading innovators in electronic devices, the result was to be sensational. The Senseo coffee pod system is the product of an alliance between two global leaders in their field with a pool.

Douwe Egberts

Egbert Douwes opened a small shop in Joure, Netherlands back in 1753. De Witte I sell coffee, tea and snuff to the townspeople, and was more than a success moderate. In 1780, his son joined the family business and together, they expanded their holdings, adding more stores across the region.

The brands include Douwe Egberts tea Pickwick Douwe Egberts coffee, espresso Piazza d'Oro, Cafitesse, coffee stack, of course, the Senseo system. Sara Lee sells products in nearly 200 countries. Sara Lee brands are Sara Lee, Earth Grains, Hillshire Farm, Jimmy Dean, Ball Park, Bimbo, Kiwi, Ambi Pur, Sanex, and of course, Douwe Egberts.

Royal Philips Electronics

In the Netherlands in 1891, Gerard Philips founded a small electronics company focused on making light bulbs technical and other electronic equipment. In the 1920s, the company had begun to expand its product line and make a name for himself as an innovator in the field of electronics. In the 1920s, it began to manufacture vacuum tubes, the acquisition of shares in Germany and the UK as subsidiaries. In 1939, Philips began marketing its electric shaver, which is sold in the U.S. as Norelco, and has become the standard bearer of his division personal care.

A Beautiful Partnership

In 2001, Douwe Egberts partnered with Philips to introduce the system Senseo, the unique system of serving coffee that uses a patented pad preparing for coffee and other hot drinks. The Senseo coffee maker was introduced for the first time in February 2001 in The Netherlands, and was made available in the U.S. in 2004.

The system uses a patented coffee dose (called a hash in some countries) which contains a premeasured amount of coffee or beverage mixes and adjusts to the coffee maker. The brewer heats the water at the correct temperature and dispensing of the drink after brewing. The main innovations were the Senseo system brewing single cup and use the pad of coffee.

Sara Lee / DE 's part of the association is, of course, coffee. Douwe Egberts offers a wide variety of coffees for all tastes and tea pods to fit the Senseo machine. Since 2004, the year that the Senseo was introduced in the U.S., other companies have the legal right to make and sell bags of coffee that they comply with of Senseo. In addition, several manufacturers of pods on the market allow consumers to make their own coffee pods. This allows the flexibility to make coffee or tea of your choice using the Senseo Brewing System.
