River Crossing Safety
River crossings can be deceptively dangerous. Even a very shallow swiftly flowing body of water can packing enough force to 'bowling' to the unwary. If you can not walk at the speed of a stick thrown into the river, or if the river is fast and above knee height, then it could be dangerous to cross. If a river is flooded, then wait for it to subside. Generally, in areas of snow trying to cross early morning before the snow melt has joined the current of a river. If in doubt about whether a river is safe to cross, then find a route alternative.
Here are some methods for water crossings …
Sola Crossing
1. If possible, see the river from the top identify the shallowest point and smooth surface of possible channels, avoiding drawbacks submerged rocks etc. Do not attempt to cross a case of large pieces of debris (logs, branches, etc) are being swept downstream.
2. Keep your boots on. Wet boots are preferable to damaged ankles or feet. Do not cross the use long pants, they increase the resistance to flow. Loosen the waist strap and chest in his pack before crossing – this way you will be able to be rapidly released if you lose your foot or is in a position where the backpack snagged and holding you down. It is also worth remembering that the package has a certain amount buoyancy and can serve as a flotation device if necessary.
3. In general, the safest area to cross will be a shallower braided or a straight section between bends in a river. If you imagine the river in the shape of the letter 'S', then the safest area to cross will be the means the "S" curves. In this way, if you lose your support, we will take the current in the bank in a bend. Notice, however, that water may be deeper and faster in the double sections, so always look for the best 'off' section of a river that will carry to a safe point and not at risk if you lose your balance.
4. Use a strong pole or stick about five or six feet long as support, placing it on its side of water up to current forces on the bottom. Always have two points of contact in the river bed at all times and cross diagonally downstream, resisting the current much you would with a strong wind. Take shuffling steps, feeling the bottom. Try not to look down at the flowing water as it may affect your balance, to look forward the best possible route. Resist the temptation to grab rocks submerged or semi-submerged in transit, as this may affect your balance.
Crossing in a match
1. Members of the stand of the party in front line, each putting their hands behind the back of the person on either side of them and grabbing the bottom of the pack that people around the shoulder. (Or clothing if there is no package is used) This 'blocking' of the party. If a package does not have a release buckle Rapid hip belt, the hip belt should be left undone and clothing took place.
2. Enter the water parallel to the current with the strongest member of the party in the up position, this is lost the pace for others. Move with the person above just a little ahead of the downstream next person and so on down the line. If a party member should be separated during the trip, the remaining members should maintain training and back either with or complete the crossing before attempting a rescue if necessary.
Crossing into groups of three
Another method is to cross the "triangle" beam. Three members from entering the water in the form of a triangle with each member to the inside, linked arms and capture each person on each side of them. The person heavy
be at the point of the triangle that looks directly at the water flow and is on the downstream side
the triangle. In turn, each member moves a step time, with the support of the other two.
With every step, make sure that the important issues is stored in impervious areas of your package. (Packed plastic garbage liners made good pack) If you lose your balance and go, release the package but have at it. Float with your head up, this will allow you to defend of potential barriers with their feet. With a rope to help cross is generally not a good idea and can be dangerous unless properly secured, and proper technique used. Strings can keep people under the water, entangling person crossing and preventing their ability to swim. It also can be caught in the river bed or a rock, holding a person in the river. " A string may end up pulling someone on the river bank. Remember that water flow is deceptively strong. Do not view river crossings lightly.
Method for measuring the width of a river (or stream)
1. A view 'A' in the opposite bank.
2. It puts a marker "B" on the front bench.
3. Walk at right angles to a limited number of steps and then place another marker of 'C'
4. Continue for another equal number of steps and then place another marker "D"
5. Turn right angled away from the river and the marker 'D' and keep moving backwards until your second marker 'C' and point 'A' on the other side of the river are online. The distance from here back to "D", give a good approximation of the width of the river or stream.
